Anyone born during or since 1966 are eligible for a FREE measles vaccine if they have no evidence of having two doses
All children over one year old who are fully vaccinated are covered, there is no need for an additional booster.
Babies under one year of age, could have their vaccine early, but they will need an additional one to comply with Centrelink requirements.
The incubation period for measles infection is between 7-18 days after exposure. It is spread through respiratory droplets. it is a serious illness that can make you very unwell.
The illness usually starts with high fever, cough and conjunctivitis. The generalised red blotch rash usually appears after 3 days.
What you should do if you are worried about measles
1- make appointment to see your GP
2- if you were born after 1966 and have not been vaccinated, the government supplies this free of charge (HLGP has this government stock)
3-if there is doubt regarding your immune status, then blood tests should be done to see whether you have immunity
4-if you have never been vaccinated, you will need 2 doses one month apart.
5- please note that if you are currently pregnant or on chemotherapy or have immune system disorders, you should NOT have the vaccine without consulting your doctor.

Home visits will be available on a case by case basis with patients that are unable to come to the clinic and if there is a doctor available. Hoppers Lane General Practice is connected to the locum service for out of hours home visiting doctors, if this is required please phone : 13 SICK (7425).
Please be aware that home visits are not for emergencies and if you have a medical emergency then phone 000 or present to the nearest hospital.
