Doctors consulting at Hoppers Lane GP provide Implanon insertions and removals right here at the clinic.
Implanon, sometimes called “the Rod”, is a common long-acting reversible contraceptive available in Australia.
It is a small, flexible rod about the size of a matchstick that is inserted under the skin of the upper arm.
The implant steadily releases a hormone called etonogestrel over a period of three years to help prevent pregnancy by:
- Thickening cervical mucus to block sperm entry
- Preventing ovulation, meaning no egg is released from the ovaries
According to The Royal Women’s Hospital, Implanon is 99.8% effective during the three years it remains in place.
Booking an Implanon Consultation
Before booking your Implanon insertion, you will need a pre-consultation appointment with your GP.
During this appointment, your doctor will:
- Review your medical history
- Discuss possible side effects and considerations
- Explain the insertion procedure
- Determine the most suitable timing with your menstrual cycle
- Arrange a pregnancy test if required
You will also receive a prescription for the Implanon device during the consultation. The device must be purchased from a pharmacy and brought with you to your insertion appointment.
Estimated Cost of the Implanon Device
- Medicare card holders: approximately $30.60
- Concession card holders: approximately $6.90
- Private patients (without Medicare): approximately $171.39
Your doctor can also discuss alternative contraceptive options to help determine the most suitable choice for your individual needs and circumstances.
What Happens During the Insertion Procedure?
The Implanon insertion procedure is quick and straightforward, usually taking only a few minutes.
For best results, the implant is typically inserted during the first three days of your menstrual cycle, provided you are not pregnant.
A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area before the small device is inserted under the skin of your upper arm, helping ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible.
Removal and Replacement
Implanon should be removed or replaced after three years.
If you decide you would like it removed earlier, your doctor can perform a simple removal procedure through a small incision under local anaesthetic.
Fees
| Service | Fee | Approximate Out-of-Pocket Cost |
